An Adventure
By: Madeline Schwartz

Carlos, Mario, Kenny, Tracy, and Marry have been good friends for many years. It’s a Wednesday an ordinary day of the week and this is an especially boring day at the café. Carlos, the adventurer, asks, “Are you off, tomorrow?” “Yes” they all say. Carlos then asks, “What about we all go to the airport. Let’s choose a destination, any destination, and any destination at all, the next flight out…. let’s go to an exciting place.

They started laughing and yelled, “Lets go!” They all go to their houses, make a bag, and go to the bank. They get together at the airport and all stand together by the television flight itinerary. Suddenly, Carlos sees that the next flight is to Saint Thomas. “Well” Carlos says, “If something goes wrong we can always come back.”

“It sounds like a plan!” Mario replies. “Maybe we should take the ferry to spend the night at Saint John. Saint John is a beautiful tourism island in the Caribbean Sea, which is a very important forest and sanctuary.” They decide to go, purchase the tickets, and they all go to a cocktail bar right at the airport to wait for their flight.

Everything goes very smooth through the fly. When they arrive in Saint Thomas it is night and everyone is in a party mood. The first stop is to the store. They see a telephone cubicle across the street by little Town Square next to the port. Carlos is looking for the yellow pages in search for a hotel. Carlos as always wants to be the leader of the group. He starts making phone calls to different hotels, however there is a problem…every hotel is booked because it is high season; overall, the whole island is closed. Their last alternate is a camping place in the middle of the forest.

Kenny is very upset because he wants to sleep in the town square. He calls a trolley that is passing by. Luckily, the driver stops and takes them to the path leading to the reception cabin. On the path they see a very thin man. He has black hair and black empty eyes and he is so very thin that they all stare at him.

They get to the cabin and pick up an ice cooler and ice to keep the drinks cool; in addition, flashlights and a map in order to find the camp area. It is 12’oclock midnight and its pitch black. There are lots of noises. There are crickets chirping, owls hooting and frogs croaking. The air is filled with twinkling fireflies. The group is quiet with one thing in mind, which was to reach safe to the camping area.

But the long path suddenly changes. There is heavy fog to a point that everyone has to hold hands in order to keep the group together. Now the map is very hard to read because of the fog. Tracy says, “Are we going to make it? We should stay safe at home.” Carlos says, “ You always a sack of nerves, calm down, woman.” They hear an animal howling; they cannot imagine what type of animal can howl like that. Now, the cravenly path seems to become so long…longer and longer and longer…. every foot becomes a mile. Their nerves become tenser with every footstep. They keep whispering and asking to themselves. “Why did we do this craziness? Why”

But not it’s too late. They look up a see two little bright lights reflecting with the flashlight. Marry says, “It’s okay guys. It’s just a donkey passing by. They all start laughing.” Finally, the friends reach to the camp. They are all safe.

Two Wednesdays later, the owner of the campground goes out to look for the five friends who have not been seen. He doesn’t reach the camp until night. When he arrives, he sees a creature hunched over. It looks like a cross between a kangaroo and an alien, gray, 4 feet tall, with large muscular legs, glowing red eyes, razor sharp fangs, clawed arms, and bat-like wings. “Chupacabra! Chupacabra!” he screams while running, but in a second the bloodsucker has hold of him. The Chupacabra lets out a big howl.
