A Holiday Story: The Three Kings

January 7th 2011 00:10
The Three Kings
The Three Kings

“Guys! Hurry, hurry!’’ Samantha says, “We have to get the grass ready for tonight!” The children are rushing to the backyard of their house. It’s 3:30 pm, the children are so exciting, and looking forward for tonight. The three children are two brothers and a little sister: Michael, Alexander and Samantha.

In the patio, Samantha sees a new neighbor, she thinks “Nice, now I can play dolls with this girl” then she smiles. “Hi, my name is Samantha. What is your name?” The happy little girl replies, “My name is Pearl. My parents just moved to that house. What are you doing with those shoe boxes full of grass?” Pearl asks. They start laughing hysterically, “Do you know what day it is, today?” Pearl is so curious “No, I don’t know”, her eyebrows frown, “I am from China and I don’t know what is so special about today.”

Samantha explains, “Tonight, we are waiting for the Three Kings. Their names are King Melchior, King Gaspar and King Baltasar. As mom explained: their robes are like crimson silk with rows of bells and pomegranates and furbelows, and their turbans are like blossoming almond-trees.” Alexander continues: “Many, many years ago, a beautiful big bright star predicted the birth of Baby Jesus, only for that night. The three worshipful kings were out of their kingdoms when the Star went before each king and his people. When they stood still and rested, the Star stood still; and when they went forward again, the Star always went before them and gave light all the way. The star gave them a sign of God.” All the children lay down on the grass and listened intently. Mom says that it’s in the bible “A virgin called Mary of Nazareth gave birth in a small barn to a baby boy. The father and the mother of the baby called him, Immanuel. The baby was a king sent by God: Jesus Christ our Savior. The three kings went into the poor little barn where the star had sent them. They fell down and worshiped the baby. They offered him gifts and treasures they presented unto him; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. Every January 6, the three Wise Men from the East, they are coming from Bethlehem of Judea, after traveling through the stars by camels at night because they rest in day. Now they bring us gifts.” When, Alexander mentions the gifts all eyes light up like bright stones. Pearl says, “Wow!”

Because the journey is such a long one, the camels need energy. Michael, Alexander and Samantha as good children put fresh grass in the shoeboxes for the camels to eat. Later, they will place the shoeboxes under the Christmas tree or under their bed. They will go to bed very early tonight and tomorrow morning they will see the gifts that the Three King will leave for them. According to tradition, the whole family will gather together for the holiday festivity to celebrate with dinner and sing Christmas songs. All the children will bring the gifts left by the Three Kings.

Michael, Alexander and Samantha are very impatient, now. Time is running and there wasting time with the new neighbor. Although, this story is new for Pearl; she wants to partake of the holiday. “New gift sounds perfect! It’s nice to meet you, Michael, Alexander and Samantha. I guess I have to run as well to get ready for the Three Kings.” Sophie runs like a thunder very excited and screaming, “Mom, Dad, we need to cut some grass!”
